Headed from Diani Beach to Mombasa for a couple days before caching a train back to Nairobi. Took a trip to Fort Jesus in Mombasa, built in 1595 by the Portuguese to protect the trading port. Between 1631 and 1895 is was recaptured nine times between the Omanis and Portuguese, eventually being captured by the British. Give you an idea of how large it is, it withstood a siege by the Omanis for two years and nine months.
Then I caught train known as the Iron Snack, the train built in England in the 1960’s is still the one being used today. Known as the Lunatic Express the tracks were laid between 1896 and 1901 as the expense of 2,498 works due to hostile tribes, tropical disease, and a pack of man hunger lions in Tsavo (which subsequently ate 80 or so African and Indian workers) About a 24 hours trip on the train.
