Collection of things from adventures around Nairobi and Kenya.
With no established public transportation system most of the Kenyan population get around in minibuses called Matutus operated by private companies. They drive like utter and complete maniacs and generally wreak havoc where ever they go, but you can get across town for just a few Shillings and a significant risk to your life. Most Matutu drivers/owners decorate or pimp out their rides to attract riders. Sounds systems, lights, paints jobs, it’s pretty awesome.
On one adventure my brother and I were coming back from Diani beach and decided to take the back way through the bush, usually not a problem, however there had been monsoon rains that knocked out most of the roads, we got stuck for about 12 hours going no where. Bridges got washed out behind us and we were trapped for half the day. Had to pull out a bus from a ditch just to across the last bridge to get home.
Traffic laws being what they are here, a light friendly suggestion, traffic can be bad sometimes. An interesting thing about the sometime horrific traffic in Nairobi is that they sell things in the jams, like anything. Water, snacks, sodas, knifes sets, hats, etc. Saw someone selling lamps in traffic one day….
The rest are just random things I found interesting.
